The OED, Sources, and a Better View
Posted on | December 20, 2008 | Comments Off
I was in my 30s before I had heard of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), which ” . . . attempt[s] to record a word’s most-known usages and variants in all varieties of English past and present, world-wide.” If I recall correctly, there are four pages of usages of red. The Web allows for some twisted tracks. I started looking for the etymology of computer bug, and was about to write of how sometimes things are just what they seem:

But sometimes I remember a lesson from historiography classes: check sources. So I went to Wikipedia, which describes the story of the first computer bug as apocryphal. Citing a source: the OED. Seems the OED recorded a use of “debugging” in 1945.
So much for a search for truth, or is accuracy the word I want?
A better view

I was disappointed with the track image of Suge’s party. Until I noticed I could choose satellite view. Much more dramatic and informative.
Walk well. God is love.
