Learning About Lettuce
Except for July through early October, we can grow lettuce on our hill. It’s too hot then, and most varieties bolt (go to seed) before they can be harvested. It is a real treat. Being able to walk into the yard with scissors and a basket and pick lunch.
Not knowing better, I planted six or [...]
The Gentle Joy of Spring
April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.
T.S. Eliot in The Waste Land
I try to be cool and not get too excited about spring, thinking Eliot might be onto something. But how marvelously fine it is to just let it wash [...]
A Spring Garden
Depression. Tropical depression. Manic depression. Economic depression. A lowering. A rising tide lifts all ships. The opposite is true, as well.
I am losing confidence in government. There is no money. Just the idea of it. The administration is making trillion dollar decisions with what appears to be a minimum of reflection. Trillions.
But. My life, [...]
Chop Chop Chili
What, you are wondering, is Chop Chop Chili. Of course I’m going to tell you. Shortly. But first, a few words about pork chops. I sometimes take a half head of red cabbage, a large onion, an apple or two, cider vinegar, currants, and a dash of cinnamon. I braise a chop, then smother it [...]
Boomer Rock
I have been thinking about freedom and the willingness and courage of self-definition. That self-definition is one of the characteristics shared by the hikers I most admire. And other friends. Having the freedom to be ourselves exists in any context, or there would be no morality. But that freedom exists at this time and [...]
Just a Day
I planted more radishes, pak choi, and basil. Designed a web page. Ate a hamburger, a lettuce salad from the garden, braised pak choi from the garden, and maple oatmeal cookies. A good walk in Joaquin Miller Park.
The simple joy of watering vegetables.
Walk well. God is love.

Adventure and Friendship
You can read about Suge’s Aconcagua adventure. In fact, I suggest you do. It reminds me of William F. Buckley’s Airborne. Adventure, good writing, and a paean to friendship.
Have fun.
Walk well. God is love.

Larry McMurtry Loves Books
I lived part of Larry McMurtry’s life. I went to school near where he grew up, near where The Last Picture Show was filmed. I was in school in Austin, as he was, and lived in a garage apartment in Houston, as he did. Some of his early books, All My Friends Are Going to [...]
Stacey’s Closed
A bookseller on Market Street in San Francisco. For over fifty years. Four floors. Iconic San Francisco retailer. I would often meet friends in San Francisco on Friday evenings for dinner, stopping by Stacey’s before meeting and picking up three or four books. Talking with the clerks, who knew my reading habits. They would comment [...]
