Not Cool

I remember the outfitter in Columbia, Missouri. My brother and I visited his shop eight years ago. He was a long distance hiker. And when my brother told him he was going to hike the PCT this year, the fellow asked him for his trail name. My brother said, “I’m not cool enough to have a trail name.” And the outfitter said, you have one now: “Not cool.” Bob was very proud of that trail name. He told me that story three or four times.
Bob’s daughter called me today and said that he had died on a trail in Missouri. It’s wretched news. And I am having a terrible time with it.

Not Cool
Walk well. God is love.

Jim, I’m so very sorry. Words seem horribly inadequate. Thinking of you: walk in love.

Jim, I’m so sorry! (I was sure I had your phone number, but I guess you called from a restricted number last week, so I couldn’t reach you by phone.)
My thoughts are with you.

Hi Jim – I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear of your brother’s passing. From the photo, Bob looks like a good guy who could get along with anybody – I guess it runs in the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you, good friend. /skb

Jim—I saw the name “Keener” in the Columbia Tribune obituary page and was so afraid that this is what it was. My heart goes out to you and your family. I’m so, so sorry.
