New Trail! New Trail!

Well, new to me. And not far away.

Chabot Regional Park trail intersection
It might surprise a regular reader that I consider myself conservative. Not a conservative, a noun; but conservative, an adjective. I resist change. Especially when I have hiking trails I like. But Joaquin Miller, beautiful as it is, is crowded. Much more crowded this year than last.
I drove up Redwood Road to Chabot Regional Park. The road wound through a steep canyon with many tall trees. Lots of vertical. I parked at the Big Bear staging area and headed into the park. Love at first sight. No one else on the trail. Well I saw two other hikers in two hours. And great trails. Well marked.
And I found the place where Rainbow Trout were first identified. Imagine that, Steve!

First identification of rainbow trout historical marker
Walk well. God is love.

Wow. And to think the Ohlone had spent the whole previous millennium wondering what that one fish was! Good thing Dr. Gibbons came along to ID it for them!
…but huh, Dr. Gibbons ID’ed it wrong. He wasn’t the first to describe rainbow trout for the scientific literature; he wasn’t even the second. Walbaum was the first, he did it in Siberia, and he, at least, had the class to use the indigenous Kamchatkan name for the fish.
I’ve come to kinda loathe historical markers. They typically tell you more about the conceits of whoever put them up than they tell you about whatever they supposedly mark.

Well, Steve, I guess it was just the third place after all. Whatever the count, let’s hike here some day.
