Housing

More accurately: shelter.
The things that give me joy are different from those that excite most others. I just watched this how-to video about erecting a tarp and got very jazzed:

The glory of God

Sitting and listening to the Vivaldi Gloria as performed by The Academy of Ancient Music, Choir of Kings College, Cambridge. Great music performed flawlessly by committed musicians and sung by a most talented, soulful choir. Excellence in every note. Few things have given me more confidence in the future than to know that this kind [...]

No disappointment

Williamsburg, Virginia is one of the places that does not disappoint.
I took a group of drug addicts from the Army there on a weekend visit. They complained about having to go from the time they first heard of the outing until they got there. No more complaints. And these were addicts. Some of the world’s [...]

Today’s hike

Same trail Jeff and I hiked on Tuesday: through Anthony Chabot Regional Park on the MacDonald, Grass Valley, Brandon, and Willow Trails.
I felt lighter and stronger today. Same trail. Good company. Sunshine. Simple. Fine.

A typical trail on the ridgeline

Same park, but heading down off the ridgeline.
Walk well. God is love.

The end of the day

and I am grateful for Elaine and Palestrina.
A sweet time with Elaine, her sister and brother-in-law. Very good food. Kindness. Maturity. Intelligence. A fineness.
And for Palestrina? The beginning of the new sound.

Doesn’t sound new, does it? But it is not plainchant. It is polyphony.
What a good thing. To listen to Palestrina at the end of [...]

A great idea

In 1934 the East Bay Regional Park District was formed. It was a great idea.

A sizable portion of the park lies on the ridgeline that runs above my home. And one of the joys new this year for me is hiking a long distance there.
A very sweet idea and implementation: benches at view sites. Someone [...]

Music and differences

Bach is a good example. A Lutheran, yet he wrote one of the most beautiful masses ever: the B minor. Leonard Bernstein wrote a mass. Few things can divide as religion can. Few things can unite as music can.
My friend David called one afternoon and said, “Jimbo, what are you doing tonight?”
“What do you [...]

Shuttle hike

Jeff came to the East Bay today and we left his car at the Chabot Staging Area and took my car back to the MacDonald Gate: the two ends of Anthony Chabot Regional Park. We had a fairly easy nine mile hike in splendid weather. Another good hike, except for cows in Bort Meadow where [...]

Yada yada yada

I’m 33 years old. I haven’t outgrown the problems of puberty. I’m already facing the problems of old age. I completely skipped healthy adulthood. I went from having orgasms immediately to taking forever.
Jason Alexander as George Costanza
Seinfeld. The art of the mundane. A fun, easy comedy. No anger. No accusations. A humorous response to [...]
